Overview of Work

The Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research Institutional Review Board (NMIMR-IRB) was established in 1999 as an independent body with the following mandate:

Evaluate and decide on the ethical merits of research protocols
To ensure and guarantee the rights, dignity, safety and protection of all individuals and communities who participate in research activities conducted by the Institute.
It is registered with the OHRP with a Federal Wide Assurance that has been maintained since inception.

Compliance and Accreditation

The IRB is currently fully functional and registered with OHRP to satisfy the revised requirements of the US Code of Federal Regulations 45 CFR 46.

Since its establishment, NMIMR-IRB has reviewed over 1503 studies; 1269 studies are closed whilst 334 studies are currently active.

Ethics Principles

The review by the IRB is guided by the under-listed four basic principles espoused in the Belmont Report (The Belmont Report | HHS.gov).

Autonomy: Respect for persons. This is the derivative principle for informed consent.
Beneficence: Do good to research participants.
Non-maleficence: Avoid harm to research participants.
Distributive Justice: Research participants should be fairly selected. Thus, the burden and benefits of research should be fair.

Who must submit research protocols to the Noguchi IRB?

NMIMR Staff: Professors/research fellows, postdoctoral fellows, research team members, and students who intend to conduct human research.
Faculty and students affiliated with the College of Health Sciences, University of Ghana who intends to conduct research involving humans.
Researchers affiliated with other non-governmental organizations or other institutions may also submit their protocol for review.

Submission and Meeting Dates

All protocols from NMIMR Staff require prior approval by the Scientific and Technical Committee (STC). Student Protocol must be approved by their Department/ Faculty/School before they are reviewed by the IRB.
