About
The Director NMIMR

Professor Dorothy Yeboah-Manu

I am pleased to welcome you to the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), College of Health Sciences, University of Ghana.

Our Institute has come a long way since its establishment in 1979, and as Director, I look forward to spearheading our continuous drive for excellence in the biomedical research ecosystem through quality research, human resource development, and by supporting issues of public health concern.

We are determined to continually improve the quality of our work output through relevant training and capacity development programmes for both research and administrative staff, and mentorship targeted mainly at students and early-career professionals. Similar training has equipped our scientists to carry out cutting edge-research in infectious diseases including malaria, tuberculosis, neglected tropical diseases and the COVID-19 and other marginalized social health issues such as suicide as well as non-infectious diseases.

As an Institute, we value the contribution of every unit and department, including our technical officers who manage the ultra-modern equipment used for various experiments, and we will continue to support their efforts through relevant training.

Another area of interest to us is the enhancement of our Quality Management Systems and coordinating adherence to the biosafety protocols. We are achieving these through the development of strong Standard Operating Protocols that will serve as guide to staff at various levels in the Institute’s units and departments.

We believe we can take advantage of the numerous opportunities for innovation and development at our disposal, and by reviewing our commitment to the Institute’s original ideals in the face of present funding opportunities, technical advancement, and skill availability, we re-position ourselves to continually make the NMIMR relevant as the leading Biomedical Research Institute in Ghana.

We are excited to work with you, our stakeholders, and I believe that as you explore this website, you will become conversant with the Institute’s work and achievements, and this will make it easier for us to strengthen our collaboration with you or foster new collaboration.

Akwaaba. Welcome.

Our Story

The Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) set up in 1979 as a semi-autonomous institute of the University is the leading biomedical research facility in Ghana. The Institute is the result of joint efforts by Prof. E. O. Easmon, former Dean of the University of Ghana Medical School, Prof. Kenji Honda of Fukushima Medical School in Japan, and the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA). It was built by the Government of Japan and donated to the Government and people of Ghana in honour of the distinguished Japanese researcher Dr. Hideyo Noguchi, who researched yellow fever in Ghana and died from the disease in the country in 1928.

Our Mission

Improving the health and wellbeing of Ghanaians and mankind through focused and relevant quality biomedical research, human resource development and support of national public health activities.

Our Vision

To be a leading global medical research centre.

The overall mandate of the Institute is to conduct research into diseases of public health importance, train postgraduate students in biomedical sciences and support the public health programmes of the Ministry of Health and Ghana Health Service. Specifically, this involved:

  • Conducting research into communicable and non-communicable diseases.
  • Providing training opportunities in biomedical research for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Providing high-end laboratory diagnostic and monitoring and surveillance services in support of national public health

The Institute is headed by a Director appointed by the University Council to exercise overall responsibility for both the scientific and administrative functions of the Institute. The Institute Administrator and Assistant Registrar assist in the performance of this function. The Institute has well-qualified scientists with expertise in diverse areas of health research who head various programs and an array of technicians, pharmacists, etc. supporting the work.
