Disease Elimination & Eradication Course (DEEC)

In 2022, the Global Institute for Disease Elimination (GLIDE), in partnership with New York University School of Global Public Health (NYU SGPH), undertook the creation and implementation of a comprehensive course aimed at empowering global health professionals from Africa and beyond — and health and development students — with the requisite competencies essential for the elimination and eradication of infectious diseases. In 2023, The Carter Center also provided critical support to co-deliver the course.

In 2024, GLIDE, in collaboration with its valued partners, Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) in Ghana, The Carter Center, and the University of Global Health Equity (UGHE) in Rwanda launched an updated iteration of this course, further enriching participants’ understanding of the fundamental principles underpinning disease elimination and eradication.

About the Course:

Throughout the course, participants will delve into the fundamental principles of disease elimination and eradication. The course is comprised of two parts:

  • Part I of the course is an online component that includes a combination of readings and written content to introduce key concepts through a series of modules.

  • Part II is in-person and further builds knowledge in the online modules and introduces application of key concepts through active learning and group participation. During the live portion of the course, participants collaboratively co-create disease elimination or eradication strategies focused on a specific disease(s) and geographic context.

The course will encompass in-depth analyses of case studies, offering insights into past experiences, the challenges, and effective interventions employed in the pursuit of disease elimination and eradication goals. Additionally, the course will initiate discussions on ethical considerations within the realm of disease elimination and eradication, navigating the intricate landscapes of politics, society, behavior, and environmental/climate factors.

Course Goals:

  • Enhance Course participants’ understanding of the core principles of disease elimination and eradication.
  • Develop strategies for the elimination and eradication of infectious diseases, particularly NTDs, polio, and malaria, through the analysis of challenges and lessons learned.

  • Course dates:
  • Online portion:
  • May 6 – July 6, 2024 for both courses (Ghana and Rwanda).

In-person portion:
UGHE campus, Rwanda from June 3 – 11, 2024

NMIMR campus, Ghana from June 24 – July 2, 2024
