Workshop on Supporting a Drug Discovery Hub Development in Ghana

The Institute with support from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is implementing a project titled ‘Supporting a Drug Discovery Hub Development in Ghana’. The project seeks to train young scientists and technicians towards building a critical mass for drug discovery applications, equip them to compete effectively for international funding for research work in Africa, offer them international exposure, and facilitate their networking and collaboration with other institutions.

The two-day project kickoff meeting, sponsored by the Academy of Medical Sciences, was attended by representatives from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and other institutions including the World Health Organization-Ghana, University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Cape Coast, University of Health and Applied Sciences, University of Dundee, Medicines for Malaria Venture, Drug Discovery and Development Centre, and Centre for Plant Medicine.

Prof. Dorothy Yeboah-Manu, Director of the Institute stated that this is part of the Institute’s ongoing continuous commitment to enhancing regional capacity for the creation and development of tools in the areas of diagnostics, vaccines, and drug discovery. The institutional representatives spoke on their institutional commitment to drug discovery and gave overviews of drug discovery collaborative research in their respective institutions.
