The Department of Parasitology at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) is at the forefront of parasitic disease research, offering a wide range and customized consultancy services, accurate parasite detection, and rigorous evaluation of test methods and diagnostic kits. The Department plays a crucial role in enhancing public health by providing reliable diagnostic expertise and solutions in parasitology. Our Department researches infectious parasitic and Neglected Tropical Diseases such as malaria, toxoplasmosis, Trypanosomiasis, Babesiosis, cryptosporidiosis, leishmaniasis, lymphatic filariasis, Onchocerciasis, schistosomiasis, helminthiasis, among others.

Expert Advice: Providing expert advice on parasitic infections, their diagnosis, treatment, and control strategies to country disease control and elimination programmes.
Training and Capacity Building: Conducting trainings (hands-on workshops and seminars) for healthcare professionals and laboratory technicians on basic and advanced diagnostic techniques and best practices in parasitology.

The Department prioritises a robust Quality Management System. Our laboratories are dedicated to adhering to stringent quality assurance protocols. We meticulously monitor examination results through equipment calibration, method verification, and internal and external quality control programs. Our Quality Management System is aligned with ISO 9001 and ISO 15189 standards. The Institutional Quality Office (IQO) develops, disseminates, and ensures the implementation of quality management documentation, including manuals and standard operating procedures (SOPs). Additionally, the IQO conducts scheduled internal audits of our laboratories to ensure compliance with standards and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 pm; 1:30 pm to 5 p.m.
Samples required for most of our tests include stool, urine, blood, and skin snips.

NB: Requests for laboratory examination may be written on the customer’s own request form (from a health facility).
For information on the cost of the tests mentioned, please contact the Department Administration at +233 24 897 5365. In situations where due to requested or recommended test methods the cost varies, this will be communicated to the client before testing begins.
