The Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), a constituent of the College of Health Sciences, University of Ghana, is set to implement one of the EDCTP3’s genomic epidemiology networks, in collaboration with Research Center Borstel (FZB) and 14 international partners.
The project which is titled “Pan-Africa Network for Genomic Surveillance of Poverty Related Disease and Emerging Pathogens (PANGenS)” has a funding of 4.998 million Euros. The main purpose of this project is to increase Africa’s capacity in genomic epidemiology and to conduct genomic epidemiology of drug-resistant tuberculosis and malaria across 12 African countries.
The capacity building strategy will include engagement of Post-docs, conducting of on-site workshops and development of free training virtual materials.
The initiative will expand south-south research collaborations, train the next generation of African scientists with cutting-edge techniques, and develop advances in disease surveillance, contributing to the African Union Agenda.
The collaborating partners are:
- KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation (KNCV), Netherlands
- Instituto Nacional de Saúde (INS), Mozambique
- Ifakara Health Institute (IHI), Tanzania
- University of Namibia (UNAM), Namibia
