NMIMR SHINES AT CHS 25TH ANNIVERSARY SPORTING GAMES

The Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) stole the show at the College of Health Sciences (CHS) 25th Anniversary Sporting Games, held at the Athletic Oval, University of Ghana, on Friday, September 19, 2025.  The event, organized as part of the ongoing Provost Fitness Friday Initiative, brought together all the constituent Schools, Institutes, and Centres under CHS to compete in football, penalty kicks, volleyball, athletics, tug of peace, and indoor games.

The Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Prof. Alfred Yawson, officially opened the games with inspiring remarks, commending the strong participation of all teams and emphasizing the importance of fitness, teamwork, and camaraderie in advancing the College’s mission.

NMIMR emerged as one of the most successful teams of the day, clinching first place in volleyball, tug of peace, table tennis and oware competition; second place in both men’s and women’s football (narrowly losing the men’s final on penalties to the University of Ghana Medical School); and third place in ampe. With victories across multiple disciplines, NMIMR proved their strength, resilience, and unity, standing out as one of the dominant teams of the games.

Prof. Dorothy Yeboah-Manu, Director of the Institute was among other dignitaries present at the event. At halftime during the football match, she was seen on the touchline motivating the NMIMR players, urging them to keep their heads up and push harder in the second half. Her encouragement lifted the team’s morale and reflected her strong support for the Institute’s sporting spirit.

Prof. Michael Ofori, Chair of the CHS 25th Anniversary Planning Committee, highlighted other activities lined up for the anniversary celebrations and encouraged the College community to participate fully as the celebrations continue.

The day ended with the presentation of trophies to the winning teams. Beyond the medals and victories, the anniversary sporting events promoted physical fitness, strengthened bonds, and reinforced a spirit of unity across the College of Health Sciences.
