The Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) hosted its first National Service Personnel (NSPs 2024/2025) seminar at the institute’s Conference Room, under the theme “What’s Next?” The seminar aimed to equip service personnel with essential knowledge in career planning, personal development, and leadership as they prepare for life beyond their service year.

The event brought together faculty members, researchers, and professionals from diverse fields to provide valuable insights and guidance to NSPs.

Miss Queenie Honey-bell Kwak, President of NMIMR’s NSP 2024/2025 cohort, delivered the opening remarks, setting the stage for an engaging and insightful session. She welcomed attendees and expressed appreciation to NMIMR’s leadership for organizing the seminar, which she described as a valuable opportunity for service personnel to gain direction in their career paths.
“As young professionals stepping into the next phase of our journeys, we often find ourselves asking, ‘What’s next?’ This seminar gives us the chance to explore that question with guidance from experienced mentors. I encourage each of us to take full advantage of the knowledge being shared today, ask questions, and actively engage with the speakers. The insights we gain here will shape our decisions and help us transition smoothly into the next chapter of our careers,” she said.

Dr. Evelyn Yayra Bonney, Senior Research Fellow at the Virology Department and Supervisor of the HIV Genotyping Lab, led the first session on “Proper Coordination of Our Lives (Work, Relationships, Personal Development).” She emphasized the importance of self-awareness, goal setting, and personal growth, encouraging attendees to be proactive in seizing opportunities. She also underscored the need to set SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound) goals and recognize the role of spirituality in both personal and professional success.
“The choices you make today shape your future. Stay disciplined, stay curious, and never stop growing,” Dr. Bonney advised.

Prof. Kwadwo Asamoah Kusi, Associate Professor at the Immunology Department, delivered a presentation on “Graduate School, Its Opportunities, and Career Planning.” He provided practical tips on graduate school applications, stressing the importance of a well-structured CV, securing strong recommendation letters, keeping academic records updated, and preparing for standardized tests such as the GRE. He also highlighted the value of mentorship and consistency in building a successful career.
“Success in academia and beyond is not accidental; it is built on intentional planning, perseverance, and strategic networking,” Prof. Kusi noted.

Pastor Elliot Mensah, founder of Kingdom Ambassadors, spoke on “Leadership, Spiritual Growth, and God’s Role in Our Career.” He shared insights on self-discovery, purpose, and career alignment, encouraging attendees to develop a strong spiritual foundation through Bible study, meditation, and mentorship. His talk provided a holistic approach to career development, integrating faith with professional aspirations.
During the interactive Q&A session, participants engaged the speakers on various career and personal development topics.
