Anti-COVID-19 Studies

Project Lead(s)
Project Background

The Department has contributed significantly towards the evaluation and establishment of the toxicity, efficacy and mode of action of several herbal products in Ghana, to boost their roles in the healthcare delivery system. Since the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, the Department has worked assiduously with other collaborators to screen various natural products for anti-COVID-19 agents. All samples are screened for cytotoxicity towards the Vero E6 cell line to determine the appropriate or non-cytotoxic concentrations for the anti-viral assay. High performance liquid chromatography is used for chemical fingerprinting of the samples. Using the Plaque assay, several medicinal products are currently being tested for their potential to inhibit the growth of the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2).
