The Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), University of Ghana, held a send-off ceremony to honour five distinguished members of staff for their dedicated service and invaluable contributions to the Institute. The event brought together management, staff, family members, friends and invited guests to celebrate the remarkable careers and enduring legacies of the retirees.
The following members of staff were honoured during the ceremony:
- Professor Regina Appiah-Opong, Department of Clinical Pathology
- Dr. Godfred Egbi, Department of Nutrition
- Professor John Kofi Odoom, Department of Virology
- Dr. Samuel Adjei, Department of Animal Experimentation
- Mr. Theodore Matey Ahuno, Administration

The ceremony commenced with an opening prayer led by Mrs. Eunice Ampem-Danso, followed by a musical interlude by the Pax Choir, whose inspiring performance made a warm and celebratory tone for the occasion.
Delivering the Purpose of Gathering, Ms. Afia Adoma Boakye, Assistant Registrar, noted that the ceremony was organized to celebrate the dedicated service and significant contributions of the retirees to the growth and success of the Institute. She emphasized the importance of recognizing staff whose commitment and professionalism have helped advance NMIMR’s mandate in research, training and administration.
In his opening remarks, the Acting Director of the Institute, Professor Collins Ahorlu, expressed heartfelt appreciation to the retirees for their years of dedicated service and unwavering commitment to excellence. He commended them for the invaluable roles they played in strengthening the Institute through research, administration and mentorship, adding that their contributions would continue to inspire future generations of staff.
A major highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of the Institute’s Citations of Honour to the retirees. On behalf of the Institute, Ms. Boakye presented the citations in recognition of their outstanding service, commitment and lasting contributions to NMIMR. Following the Institute’s presentations, the respective departments of the retirees paid glowing tributes to their colleagues. Representatives from the retirees’ five respective departments reflected on the former’s’ professionalism, dedication, mentorship and the positive impact they made within their departments. The presentations were accompanied by gifts and tokens of appreciation as colleagues celebrated their remarkable careers.

The NMIMR Welfare Association also presented each retiree with a cheque in recognition of their years of dedicated service and commitment to the Institute, adding to the day’s tributes and expressions of appreciation.
Speaking on behalf of the retirees, Professor Regina Appiah-Opong expressed sincere gratitude to management, colleagues, family and friends for the honour bestowed on them. She thanked the Institute for the opportunities, support and meaningful relationships built throughout their years of service, and encouraged staff to remain committed to excellence, teamwork and the continued advancement of the Institute.

It concluded with a vote of thanks, a closing prayer led by Pastor Alex Danso-Coffie, and a get-together where colleagues, family members and friends shared memorable moments with the retirees.
The retirement send-off served as a fitting tribute to five exceptional members of the NMIMR family whose dedication, professionalism and commitment have left an enduring legacy. Although they retire from active service, their contributions to the Institute and the scientific community will continue to be remembered and celebrated.
