Who We Are
NINE (NMIMR Initiative for NTDs Elimination) is a strategic advocacy and resource mobilization platform of the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research dedicated to accelerating the elimination of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs).
We bring together researchers, health professionals, policymakers, students, donors, media, and communities to drive sustainable action against diseases that continue to affect the most vulnerable populations.

Objectives NINE
NINE aims to:
- Conduct cutting-edge research into diagnostics, treatment and vaccines, and promote innovative strategies in the fights against NTDs.
- Build strong partnerships and attract funding from national and international stakeholders.
- Organize specialized training workshops for professionals and NTD program managers.
- Host conferences, seminars, and public lectures to disseminate findings and foster dialogue.
- Serve as a policy think tank to guide national and regional strategies for NTD elimination.

Key Findings
Neglected Tropical diseases (NTDs) represent a group of 21 diseases that affect more than 1 billion people globally. Ghana is endemic for 14 out of the 21 NTDs identified by WHO. These include
- Lymphatic Filariasis
- Onchocerciasis
- Schistosomiasis
- Soil-transmitted helminths (STH)
- Buruli ulcer
- Guinea worm
- Leprosy
- Yaws
- Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT)
- Rabies,
- Cutaneous Leishmaniasis
- Trachoma
- Scabies
- Dengue
- NOMA and
- Snake bite envenoming.
Of these the NMIMR is involved in research on Lymphatic Filariasis, Onchocerciasis, Schistosomiasis, Soil-transmitted helminths (STH), Buruli ulcer, Yaws, Cutaneous Leishmaniasis, Trachoma, Scabies, Dengue and Snake bite envenoming.
NINE furthers the NMIMR’s mandate and serve as a hub for interdisciplinary research, innovation, public engagement, advocacy and resource mobilization, contributing to national efforts to eliminate NTDs by 2030.
NTDs cause disability, stigma, poverty, and economic burden — yet they are preventable and treatable.
NINE exists to change the narrative from neglect to elimination.
