The Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research is committed to health, safety and environmental protection in all its programs and activities. The Institute, through its Safety Programme, is committed to making our premises, work environments and satellite working sites as safe as possible, to protect you from harm and to prevent accidents and injuries. We have high standards for safety here. The Programme employs a risk-based approach to the development and implementation of effective mitigation measures. We recognize the hazards using biosafety and biosecurity best practices and monitor the performance of the system with a robust non-conformity management and a corrective action paradigm.
Since its inception, the Safety Office has facilitated the training of Safety Officers for the nine research Departments in the Institute and for all research supporting units. The Office has also coordinated the training of fire wardens and first aiders for the Institute. The Office, in consultation with the Health and Safety Committee conducts annual Biosafety and Biosecurity trainings for all staff the Institute. This training serves as a certification for laboratory staff to access the laboratories of the Institute. Over the past two years, the Office has actively created awareness on the need for enforcement of safety rules and regulations in the Institute. The Safety Office works with the Health and Safety Committee and the Biorisk Management Committee in identifying risks, determining mitigation measures, implementing them and evaluating their effectiveness through the Noguchi Biorisk Management Programme.
