Project Background

Malaria and arboviral diseases insecticide-based vector control remains one of the major strategies being adopted for the control of malaria and arboviruses globally and in Ghana. However, insecticide resistance threatens to hinder the successful implementation of malaria vector control program in the country. There is very little information on the insecticide resistance status of malaria vectors across the various ecological zones in the country. In collaboration with the National Malaria Control Programme, I have helped to establish the National Insecticide Resistance Monitoring Partnership (NIRMOP) concept for the Ghana Health Service and the National Malaria Control Programme and currently coordinating the collection of resistance data from 20 sentinel sites across the country. We are also generating insecticide resistance data on Aedes mosquitoes in Ghana.

Objectives/Research Areas
  • Malaria and Arboviral Entomology: Research interest is in the determination of transmission indices for vector-borne diseases, monitoring vector control interventions, insecticide resistance, vector species identification, vector control, and effectiveness of insecticide treated nets.
  • Phase III trial of the efficacy and durability of long-lasting nets
  • Impact of different Vector control interventions on vector-borne diseases
Key Findings

We have provided consultancy services to many vector control companies in Ghana with regard to insecticide resistance management. I was also involved in monitoring the insecticide profile of malaria vectors in the Kome area of Chad. I was a consultant for WHO that formulated the National Insecticide Resistance Monitoring and Management Plan for Ghana. The information from this research has helped the NMCP in Ghana to make evidence-based decisions on malaria vector control and also the management of insecticide resistance in the country.
